With less than nine days left till the EPL transfer window closes the Daily Mail are the latest publisher to claim that Kieran Tierney is on the brink of joining Arsenal.

The story has rumbled on for over a month with Sky Sports sources claiming that a deal is imminent most weekends with other publishers happy to follow that up for a couple of days.

Arsenal seem to have an elastic budget of £45m to provide Unai Emery with three or four quality additions to his squad with Tierney a target to prop up a defence which is likely to lose skipper Laurent Koscielny who refused to travel on the club’s pre-season tour.

According to the Daily Mail:

Arsenal are close on an agreement with Celtic for Kieran Tierney in a revised deal

  • The deal looked to have collapsed as Arsenal refused to increase the upfront fee

  • Unai Emery remains keen to get the deal over the line and sign the left-back

  • Tierney, a boyhood Celtic fan, told his club he wants a Premier League chance

The final point seems especially dubious with Tierney not giving any public indication of anything other than wanting to remain at Celtic where he is under contract until 2023.

Four competitive matches into the new season the defender has still to resume full training following a double hernia operation and pelvic issues.

While a short term injury isn’t likely to derail a major transfer Arsenal have very pressing needs to strengthen their side for the start of the season with fans demanding change after their toothless defeat from Chelsea in the final of the Europa League.
