Celtic fans could be forgiven for a feeling of Deja Vu as Leeds United apparently ‘enter the race’ for Romaine Sawyers.

Moving into the English transfer market has been an unexpected move this summer but it’s one that has so far only brought disappointment.

Luca Connell has followed the cross-border route taken by Armstrong Oko Flex, Kundai Benyu and Moussa Dembele but when it comes to regular transfer business it’s difficult not to get that sinking feeling.

A few days after interest in Luton’s Jack Stacey surfaced the full-back was on his way to Bournemouth with bids for Huddersfield’s Tommy Smith following a similar process with Stoke City expected to tie up his signing. Transfer fees of £4m wouldn’t have been out of Celtic’s budget.

Updating on Brentford midfielder Sawyers the Daily Record reports:

Celtic are set to scrap it out with Leeds to land Brentford playmaker Romaine Sawyers. The Parkhead men are in the hunt for the £2.5million-rated midfielder but face competition from several clubs in England.

Leeds are the latest to show an interest but Record Sport understands the Championship big guns have yet to make an official bid. United boss Marcelo Bielsa is looking to strengthen his engine room after allowing Pontus Jansson to move to Brentford. The South American is keen on taking Sawyers in the opposite direction but Celtic remain bang in the frame.

Celtic’s successful transfer business this summer has involved Christopher Jullien from Toulouse and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo signing from Rapid Vienna.
