Incredibly the Daily Record has broken rank and decided to take yesterday’s ‘many millions of pounds’ story about Sports Direct’s victory over ‘Rangers’ into the mainstream.

The judgement was published on line in mid-afternoon on Monday but while it trended on social media and message-boards it was body swerved by Scotland’s main publishers.

The tea time news on BBC and STV didn’t go near the story, instead they spread a message of joy about an Ibrox based company discovering diversity in the year 2019! The late news on both channels opted to body swerve the story that was already seven hours old.

Daytime newspaper desks are now filled by eager young social media pups scouring Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for stories, at the weekend Celtic’s interest in Andrea Bertolacci reached the Record after being created by two fans on a Whatsapp group!

All of the big publishers had access to the Sports Direct report, they headlines were easy to fetch, fans had already fished them out to make life even easier but throughout Monday no one was prepared to touch the story.

They could have gone with ‘Rangers face bill for many millions of pounds’ as the Record finally decided at 4.50 this morning or with ‘effect their ability to function as a football club’.

For fan reaction there was the classic ‘Do you think another insolvency event is likely’ straight from their selective quoting from the Follow Follow message board.

Back in November 2010 the Record was at the forefront of introducing a Motherwell based billionaire to their army of readers, it was only a month before administration that they started to question the off the radar wealth of Mr Whyte.

Having championed Mr King before and since his March 2015 revolution the signs are bleak now with the Glasgow based publisher finally stumbling on the crippling economics of the company that only has the Close Season Cup on their list of honours.
