Old bhoy Greig Spence scored the only goal of the game as a Celtic XI lost 1-0 away to Arbroath today.

The striker won SFA Youth Cup winners medals at Hampden in 2010 and 2011 as part of Stevie Frail’s squad before moving off on a career that has included three spells at Alloa and two at Raith Rovers before joining Arbroath in January.

Celtic started with three trialists, one of them being former Ibrox starlet Liam Burke as Tommy McIntyre prepares a squad for the season ahead without confirmation of whether they will play in the Reserve League which has definitely lost Hibs, Aberdeen and St Johnstone.

Six of the starting selection played in the first team win over Pinkafeld but the front trio of Karamoko Dembele, Jack Aitchison and Armstrong Oko-Flex found Dick Campbell’s defence less forgiving.

The first definite fixture of the new season for the Colts is away to Queens Park in the Tunnocks Challenge Cup, if Celtic get through that they will then travel to Falkirk in the second round.

CELTIC: Mullen; Trialist, Miller, Welsh, Church, Coffey, Dembele, Trialist, Aitchison, Trialist, Oko-Flex

SUBS: David McKay, Liam Hughes, Cameron arper, Grant Savoury, Connor McBride, Leo Mazis, Brody Paterson
