Silvan Widmer is the latest quality right-back being linked with Celtic, at around the same time as Hatem Abd Elhamed has signed on to fill that problem position.

Widmer joined Basel last summer in a £4m deal from Udinese with the Swiss side unlikely to be in a rush to sell the 26-year-old.

In all honesty Widmer is likely to have more glamorous options than Celtic if he wishes to move on with Germany a more likely destination than moving to Scotland to play for a club with a similar European profile to Basel.

A year ago it seemed that Celtic were close to signing Cristiano Piccini but lost out to Valencia in a £7m transfer. The right-back issue continued through January with Timothy Castagna linked to Celtic before he helped Atalanta into a Champions League place. In the end Jeremy Toljan arrived on loan and departed almost un-noticed.

The Daily Record has picked up on a story in the print edition of the Daily Mail which also discusses Antonio Barragan of Real Betis and Robert Gumny, Lech Poznan’s u-21 internationalist.

Neil Lennon mentioned a recent four hour meeting discussing one position, hopefully Celtic fans won’t have to wait until deadline day on September 2 for the long anticipated arrival of a top quality right back.
