Celtic have been linked with a January bid for Lawrence Shankland.

According to a report in the Daily Record the Dundee United striker was watched by Tosh McKinlay as he scored a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over Morton on Saturday.

Shankland has scored 15 goals so far this season in 12 matches to put Dundee United ahead of his old team Ayr United at the top of the table.

After maintaining his record of just over a goal a game for Ayr Celtic were linked with Shankland in January but an injury put him out of action with his strike rate tailing off.

Sunderland were the biggest club linked with the free agent in the summer but Dundee United came up with the most attractive offer with the 24-year-old leading the promotion bid for Robbie Nielson’s side.

In 2013 Aberdeen signed Shankland from Queens Park but he never made the breakthrough at Pittodrie despite loan spells at Dunfermline, St Mirren and Morton.

Ian McCall took him to Ayr United in 2017 where he scored 50 goals in 59 SPFL matches to clinch promotion and earn Ayr a play off spot in their first season in the Championship.

With concerns over Leigh Griffiths Celtic could be in the market for a striker in January while the scoring form of Odsonne Edouard could attract offers of over £20m next summer with the Frenchman likely yo miss Celtic’s UEFA qualifiers due to France being involved in the Olympic Games at the same time.

Shankland is on a three year contract with Dundee United.
