Steven Gerrard has been knocked back in an attempt to bring Claudio Marchisio to Ibrox.

All through the summer stories emerged of how various footballers took a call from the Ibrox boss and instantly jumped on a plane to sign for the Liverpool legend.

Three wins on the trot for the Ibrox side and a place in the group stage of the Europa League sent the hype into overdrive but that came to a halt with Celtic’s win at Ibrox on Sunday.

Ryan Kent was signed from Liverpool just before the transfer window closed but free agents can still be signed with the 55 times capped Italian midfielder available after leaving Zenit St Petersburg.

The Daily Record reports:

Former Juventus star Claudio Marchisio has turned down an offer to play for Rangers – according to a report. The Italian midfielder is a free agent after leaving Zenit St Petersburg in July.

Steven Gerrard reportedly offered him the opportunity to move to Scotland but the 33-year-old has rejected the chance, according to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira. Rangers have a number of midfield options with Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, Greg Docherty, Andy King and Scott Arfield all available to him.

Since completing his media duties after the defeat from Celtic Gerrard hasn’t said a word in public.
