Celtic’s reserve side face Hibs today in a tournament aimed to fill the void created by the decision to pull out of the SPFL Reserve League.

Last season’s 18 team competition which involved just 17 fixtures proved to be unsatisfactory with only 12 teams taking part this season.

In it’s place the Daily Record reports that the two Glasgow clubs have joined Hibs, Aberdeen, Brentford and Huddersfield to play home and away ahead of a final tie.

The teams will be made up of u-21 players giving summer signings Luca Connell, Jeremie Frimpong and Lee O’Connor the chance to get some game time and impress. Three over-age players and an over-age keeper can be played.

Towards the end of the transfer window Robbie Deas, Ewan Henderson, Stephen Welsh and Daniel Church moved out on Development loans which allows them to also play with their parent clubs.

Next Tuesday Celtic face Morton in the Reserve Cup having beaten Dundee in their opening match with Leigh Griffiths among the scorers.
