Chris McLaughlin of BBC Scotland has come under fire for his coverage of Celtic being charged by UEFA for ‘illicit banners and chants’ during the match against Lazio.
Taking the default position that the target of Celtic supporters’ anger and abuse must be in the right, the chief sports reporter at BBC Scotland has surpassed himself.
The most fanatical of spin doctors would pause for a moment before passing on McLaughlin’s description of Mussolini but the state broadcaster had no problem in applying the mass murderer in the kindest possible light.

Here is the BBC in 2001 when Lazio signed Fabio Liverani.
They described them as,
“a team once supported by Italy’s Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.”Fascist dictator.

UEFA has repeatedly fined Lazio for the racist actions of their supporters, now that another support has highlighted the issue they find themselves in the dock facing a charge from UEFA.

It’s not known whether Celtic will challenge against the charge of supporters waving illicit banners, the club has a long record of going along with disciplinary orders from governing bodies.
Celtic won last week’s match 2-1 with around 10,000 hoops supporters expected in Rome next week for the return match which will see part of the Curva Nord at the Olympico Stadium closed down due to racist actions during the Europa League match against Rennes.
