Leigh Griffiths will step up his return to first team action by training on grass on Thursday.

The striker hasn’t played any competitive football since the end of August and has been missing from the Celtic matchday squad since the opening Europa League.

Griffiths scored three times in the early weeks of the season but in recent times Odsonne Edouard has carried the main striking threat.

At his media conference today Neil Lennon revealed that Vakoun Bayo requires a scan but there was better news about Griffiths.

He told Celtic TV:

Leigh is back on the grass now. He has been doing some physical work with the fitness coaches and we hope he starts training again on Thursday.

Tomorrow’s match with St Mirren is the middle fixture in a run of three games in seven days with Edouard likely to start all three.

Last December Celtic announced that Griffiths was taking a break from football. Although he returned to training at the end of March, he never played any competitive football.

The Scotland striker scored in his first comeback match in a pre-season friendly against Pinkafeld with further goals scored against Nomme Kalju, St Johnstone and Motherwell.
