Chris Sutton has warned Celtic fans that they are unlikely to see te best of Leigh Griffiths this year.
The striker missed the second half of last season to deal with personal issues but returned to action in pre-season, scoring in each of Celtic’s first two SPFL fixtures.
It looked like Celtic had rediscovered a top striker with Griffiths expected to return to the Scotland international squad but since a 10 minute substitute appearance against Hearts at the end of September he hasn’t put in an appearance.
A groin strain followed by a virus meant that he failed to play between the two most recent international breaks with questions on his fitness and availability a regular feature of Neil Lennon’s media conferences.
Discussing the striker in the Daily Record Sutton said:
There was excitement about the Leigh Griffiths earlier in the season but it might have been unrealistic to expect him to maintain it. There was a bounce but it’s going to take him time to get fully back to where he was a couple of seasons ago. Some setbacks might be expected and we just don’t know where he will be in the process come January.
After a spate of bizarre rumours on social media Griffiths posted a video clip on his Instagram account from the Celtic gym at the start of the week.
