Tommy McIntyre was delighted to see Liam Burt score a hat-trick in Tuesday’s 6-0 win over Stenhousemuir for a Celtic reserve side.

Two goals in the first 15 minutes from Leigh Griffiths caught the attention but not far behind was the contribution of the former Murray Park starlet.

Burt joined Celtic for training in pre-season then signed a contract on the day that he scored the winning penalty in the Tunnocks Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Queens Park.

I said to him that he has worked really hard over the last two or three weeks, (tonight) was a continuation of the way that he has been in training and he gets his reward. He’s one of those players that when he is on it, he’s on it. He showed that tonight. He was outstanding tonight as were others but I thought that Liam Burt did really well.

As well as his three goals Burt put through a great defence splitting pass for Griffiths to score his second goal.

Unlike his predecessor Neil Lennon makes a point of attending as many reserve matches as possible, opting for a wet night at Lennoxtown ahead of a cosy night at Hampden with the fat cats.

The next scheduled match for Tommy McIntyre’s side is a Reserve Cup tie against Motherwell on Monday December 1 at Lennoxtown, kick off 1.30pm.
