Jeremie Frimpong saluted a Celt that he has still to play alongside as he took a back-seat for the 3-1 win over Rennes.

When Neil Lennon registered his squad for the competition at the start of September the young defender was an unknown quantity after his deadline day move from Manchester City.

Frimpong has been on fire over his half dozen top team appearances this season but last night he acknowledged Mikey Johnston as ‘Serious baller’ as he watched from the back of the stand.

The winger picked up a thigh strain during Celtic’s Glasgow Derby victory in September but made the most of his return to fitness with a goal seven minutes after replacing James Forrest midway through the second half.

There was no signs of a lack of sharpness as he won the ball, exchanged passes then drilled a low and accurate shot across the goalkeeper into the net to put Celtic three in front.

On Sunday Frimpong and Johnston could play together for the first time as the Young Team head confidently to Ross County on SPFL duty.
