Callum McGregor has opened up on the speculation that he could be reunited with Brendan Rodgers.

When the former Liverpool boss did his overnight flit from Celtic in February the midfielder and Kieran Tierney were linked with following their old boss to Leicester City.

On transfer deadline day in the summer there was a report of an enquiry coming in from Leicester for McGregor but after losing Tierney to Arsenal it was something that Celtic couldn’t consider.

The January transfer window is less than two months away but before the speculation could begin McGregor has signed a new five year deal that could see him take on the captaincy if Scott Brown ever retires.

Discussing the obvious connection with Rodgers the midfielder told The Sun:

I had a good relationship with the previous manager. He goes away and there’s that link that he wants you. It’s nice as it shows you were doing something right for the time he was here.

You take it as a compliment but as soon as it passed, I’ve been totally focused on football. It wasn’t really on my mind. Since the season started I have been playing every three days. So I’ve just been focused on the games. It’s been total football since June and the games are racking up.

I’ve just been focusing on my job and the manager has been first class with me. I wasn’t really that up or down. It was about getting fit and taking it from there.

I’m delighted to get it done and create that stability. Brendan texted me just to say ‘Congratulations, you really deserve it’. He said he was happy for me. I just sent him a text back saying ‘Thanks very much for everything you have done as well’.

Ronny Deila gave McGregor his big chance when he took over as manager from Neil Lennon but by the time his two year reign had ended the Academy kid had drifted out of the first XI.

It took McGregor until the autumn of the 2016/17 Invincible season to force his way into Rodgers’ side but since then he hasn’t looked back, playing more games than any footballer in Europe last season.
