SPFL clubs have handed Neil Doncaster an incredible 30% pay rise despite a drop in income.

The former Norwich chief executive is rarely seen on a Saturday anywhere near an SPFL fixture but seems to have a magnetic hold over the clubs despite the numerous problems that have beset the Scottish game.

A new exclusive five-year television deal with Sky Sports still leaves the value of the Scottish game trailing behind the money being brought in for television rights in countries like Switzerland, Norway and Denmark where football isn’t even the primary sport.

No other sport comes close to gathering the public interest in the way that football does in Scotland but our clubs continue to be the poor relations of the European game.

Celtic collected less than £3.5m from sponsorship and prize money for winning last season’s title- in contrast clubs that reach the Play Off stage of the Champions League are awarded £5m from UEFA.

Covering Doncaster’s pay packet the Daily Mail reports:

SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster has been handed a performance related bonus of £91,000. The Scottish Professional Football League’s annual report and financial statement up to May 31, 2019 reveals an inflation busting pay packet of £388,000 for the highest paid director – up from £297,000 in 2018.

Doncaster’s 30 per cent pay hike came as part of a long-term incentive plan which rewarded the delivery of a new £160million five-year Premiership TV deal with Sky Sports beginning in season 2020-21.

Any criticism of Doncaster is wide of the mark, he gets paid what the member clubs agree to, clearly, he enjoys strong support across the game.

The SPFL sponsorship deals with Ladbrokes and Betfred expire at the end of this season.
