The phrase that there are lies, damn lies and statistics has been given even greater credibility over the last week.
It seems that in the age of analysis, statistics become increasingly important and for some people the basis for all judgements.
These days players can have their assists recorded which comes in handy for strikers that rarely find the net but need reassured that they are making a worthwhile contribution.

Alfredo Morelos doesn’t need to add assists to his stats as the Scottish media desperately attempt to drum up interest in the striker.
He has a decent scoring record but to compare him favourably to Henrik Larsson is a few steps too far. With a goal against Feyenoord the hard of thinking are no claiming that the Colombian is a better striker than the former Barcelona man. Once upon a time the same argument was put up for Kris Boyd.
When Larsson was at Celtic the second UEFA tournament carried some prestige. There were no qualifying rounds or group stage in the 2002/03 season, just straight knock-out ties through to the final where teams had to give it everything or they were out.
Among his 12 goals from 12 matches Larsson scored in the final, semi-final and quarter final, when Morelos does that he can be compared with the Swede.
Ryan Christie and Paul Gascoigne are completely different types of players, one scored goals in Europe and the other picked up red cards. In 13 European appearances this season Christie has scored 7 goals.
