Borna Barisic’s late own goal at Ibrox last night cost his club €880,000 in prize money from UEFA and a greatly reduced chance of a further €1,100,000 for reaching the last 16 of the Europa League.

With 88 minutes on the clock Steven Gerrard’s side were leading Young Boys of Berne 1-0 and sitting at the top of their group. When the Croatian international star turned the ball into his own net a win bonus of €570,000 was converted into just €190,000 for a draw. Winning the group produces a bonus of €1,000,000 which will now go to Porto with €500,000 paid out to the runners-up.

At current exchange rates the own goal will cost the club £730,000 as they go into the unseeded section of Monday’s Round of 32 draw.

As a critical stage of the season begins Steven Gerrard’s side have won just one of their last five matches (at home to Hearts) with draws against Young Boys, Aberdeen and Feyenoord alongside defeat from Celtic.

Ryan Jack picked up a late red card in last night’s match which will rule the midfielder out of the away tie in the Round of 32 which will be played on February 20.

The draw will be made on Monday at 12 noon Celtic Park Time with the Ibrox side avoiding Celtic and Porto among the 16 seeded clubs which also includes Manchester United, Ajax, Arsenal, Inter Milan and RB Salzburg.
