John Beaton found himself at the centre of attention last night after awarding a free kick against Lewis Ferguson after he tripped Alfredo Morelos at Pittodrie.

Apparently he should have given a penalty- looking on from within five yards of the incident.

Beaton’s naked eye was closer than any television camera, closer than Steven Gerrard and closer than Allan McGregor who confronted the referee at the final whistle.

In what is becoming common place it seems that star struck match officials are apologising to Steven Gerrard for perceived decisions that go against his side.

In March this year The Sun reported:

REFEREE Steven McLean phoned Steven Gerrard to apologise for missing the foul that led to Hibs’ equaliser last Friday night. The official blundered by failing to award Rangers a free-kick when Stephane Omeonga tripped up James Tavernier.

Earlier this season Kevin Clancy denied Celtic two clear second half penalties during the 1-1 draw with Hibs at Easter Road, there is no record of Neil Lennon receiving an apology. Clancy is the fourth official at Hampden on Saturday and is expected to referee the December 29 Glasgow derby.

Last December Beaton failed to take any action for violent attacks by Alfredo Morelos on Scott Brown, Tony Ralston and Ryan Christie.

After calling out for transparency Celtic had a private meeting with the SFA in which the issue was resolved.
