Celtic fans were in no mood for a sugar-coated version of last night’s Europa League exit at the hands of FC Copenhagen.
With eight minutes left in the match it looked like Odsonne Edouard’s penalty had dug the team out of a hole but incredibly there was still time to lose two goals as the stadium rapidly exited.
Many supporters took to social media to express their anger at a defeat with a familiar ring to it, see Cluj, AEK Athens and Malmo for the most recent examples of failing to punch your weight in Europe.
Neil Lennon and Jozo Simunovic were the main targets for criticism but from the boardroom to the social media staff almost everyone was in the firing line.
For the umpteenth season running the January transfer window had failed to improve the team with Ismaila Soro and Patryk Klimala watching the Europa exit from the stand, unable to get into a matchday squad that was missing Ryan Christie and Olivier Ntcham.
The traditional Europa exit now leads to a switch in emphasis to domestic matters, another SPFL title looks likely but unless there is another major change in direction there will be more grief and angst in August when the Champions League dream is killed off. Again.
