Courtesy of a Sky Sports translation Alfredo Morelos has explained the gesture that he made to Celtic fans at the end of the December 29 derby match.

Across almost all of the world the cut throat gesture is very well known but according to the Colombian it had a very different meaning.

Translated by Sky Sports he said:

I just wanted them to stop and it was sort of a symbol saying ‘come on guys the game’s over, this doesn’t need to continue during the match. I understand if you are criticising but now it’s over’. I’m not someone who wants to start a fight with anyone, I don’t have any problem with any fans, any race and any religion and so I hope to be treated that same way.

The Sky Sports interview took place on Friday ahead of tabloid claims about the personal life of the Ibrox striker.

Morelos was given a second yellow card in stoppage time of the last derby fixture, as he walked off the pitch he made the gesture to Celtic fans in the South Stand. Almost three weeks after the match The Sun reported that he had been given a third yellow card in the dressing room after the match.

Between August 2018 and December 2019, the Ibrox striker picked up seven red cards with two coming against Celtic and three in matches against Aberdeen.

In December 2018 Morelos was involved in attacks on Ryan Christie, Tony Ralston and Scott Brown that went unpunished by referee John Beaton.
