A Colombian based journalist has highlighted the ineptitude, a lack of due diligence and pushing of UK media outlets. Step forward Simon Edwards.
Without exception the translation offered by Sky Sports of their Alfredo Morelos interview was accepted without questioning.
Not every publisher will have access to a Spanish speaker but an organisation with the resources of the BBC has no excuses. Had they deployed those resources properly they could have had a blockbuster exclusive highlighting the ineptitude of a rival broadcaster. Instead they chose to run with the accusations against Celtic fans even though there wasn’t a single specific mention throughout the interview.
From the off there was something strange about the seamless publication of an interview where the questions were asked in English, answered in Spanish with slick translations in easy to use bite sized headlines. Sky used it with bells and whistles across all platforms, every hour it was covered by Sky Sports News.
If the BBC got an interview coming in from North Korea they would be quick enough to analyse the content to ensure that the translation presented was accurate.
Celtic’s statement yesterday afternoon has wrong footed most media outlets, another nail has been hammered into the coffin of the BBC and others even though they have lesser resources.
This Morelos situation gives a fascinating insight into how ineptitude, a lack of due diligence and pushing an established narrative can lead to a complete distortion of the truth
Firstly, he does discuss racism & things being thrown, which is very serious & has to be condemned https://t.co/faPnu8NjBL

In the interview he doesn’t once mention Celtic specifically but rather points to the racism & abuse he has received from away fans during his time in Scotland
In passing he mentions one incident where his mother was in the ground playing against Aberdeenpic.twitter.com/f7C0JygHMn

This is the worst translation I have ever seen in my life
They have taken a few general themes & then completely invented the actual words
The last sentence for example “No, as I told you one has to take care with everything”
Complete misrepresentation of everything he says https://t.co/wsj5gkFbVC

What Morelos actually says in this interview:
“There have been a lot of racist gestures towards me. Including in Aberdeen with my mum, she was with me & they threw coins, threw everything. Sometimes when I celebrate goals in away games” https://t.co/wsj5gkFbVC

“Are you ever worried about your safety?”
“I don’t know what they wanted to do, I don’t know what they are going to do. They hadn’t done what they wanted. If I hadn’t noticed that the kid was under the car I don’t know what could have happened”https://t.co/i91x8qvyVA
