Fresh from his outrage at Leigh Griffiths throwing tape into a bin away to Kilmarnock Steven Thompson has claimed that the Celtic striker should have been sent off yesterday at Hamilton.

During the first half Griffiths tussled with home defender Sam Woods who fell to the deck.

As the Celtic forward looked to get back involved in the match Woods rolled towards him with an arm reaching Griffiths’ leg before he doubled up in pain.

Referee Nick Walsh booked Griffiths and Alex Gogic of Hamilton for his part in the incident but Thommo saw it differently.

Covering Sportscene last night the Daily Record reports:

Thompson insisted: “I think it’s a red. I think he knows what he’s doing – it’s certainly not subtle. For me, I think it’s a red card.

“The only thing that comes into my mind is brutality or excessive force. Maybe it’s not, but the last time I checked you certainly can’t stand on somebody’s chest. I think it was a red card.”

Thompson echoed the thoughts of Ally McCoist who was on duty earlier in the day for BT Sport.

Despite the controversy Griffiths played a full part in Celtic’s victory with Accies defender Jamie Hamilton red carded in the 35th minute for barging the Celtic striker as he prepared to shoot.

Odsonne Edouard scored from the free-kick with second half goals from Chris Jullien, Edouard and James Forrest ensuring an away win with Neil Lennon’s side now seven points clear at the top of the SPFL Premiership.
