Frank McAvennie expects to see Celtic’s front two return to work with a smile on their face against Hearts tomorrow night.

Against Hamilton and Motherwell it seemed like Odsonne and Leigh Griffiths were made to play alongside each other after almost six years of Celtic playing with just one striker.

Gary Hooper and Tony Stokes were the last partnership to flourish for the hoops but stretching back almost three decades the front two were the focal point of the Celtic side.

McAvennie only spent 18 months as a Celtic player but during that time he formed productive partnerships with Andy Walker and Mark McGhee.

Edouard and Griffiths sat out Sunday’s Scottish Cup win over Clyde but McAvennie is looking forward to the novelty of a striking duo reinforcing Celtic’s place at the top of the SPFL Premiership.

He told The Sun:

We all know how important a player Odsonne is, but Griff was rested for the Clyde game as well.

I always thought Edouard was a wonderful player and that he could match and maybe overtake what Moussa Dembele did at Celtic. He’s got that much ability.

I also think he is enjoying playing with someone up front with him. He is getting a new lease of life. He can play up front on his own, but it’s a new system and it’s worked well.

Griff is such a wonderful player with his flicks and you can see the two of them have an understanding now. Two strikers used to be the way and you don’t get it now.

I’m delighted for Griff. They all have a smile on their faces and Edouard and Griff were a joy to watch against Motherwell. They looked like they were enjoying themselves.

When you enjoy your work, I think you become better at it. I was fortunate I enjoyed all my years playing football.

With Edouard and Griffiths as the first-choice pairing Neil Lennon has Patryk Klimala and Vakoun Bayo as back-up with both men getting game time in the win over Clyde.
