Hugh Burns has launched an incredible attack on John Hartson after the former Celtic striker suggested that the Ibrox club would emerge with credit if they didn’t contest awarding the title to their city rivals.

‘Absolute nonsense, doesn’t have a clue and not living in the real world’ were some of the phrases used by the former Rangers TV pundit.

With a 13 point lead at the top of the table a BBC simulation concluded that there was a 98.87% chance of Celtic winning the title which matches in with recent form.

Had the lead been chopped down to 13 points from 20 or so Burns might have some sort of case but in their 10 matches since the winter break Celtic have extended their lead at the top from two points to 13.

Logic rarely features in Scottish football with Burns telling The Sun:

There is no chance Rangers can concede the title. If that was the case then Celtic’s ninth straight title would mean nothing.

Big John is talking absolute nonsense. He doesn’t have a clue and I don’t think he is living in the real world. It’s a case of playing to the crowd and trying to appease the Celtic fans.

Of course the odds are stacked against Rangers and it looks like Celtic will win the title if the season is played to a finish but for Rangers just to roll over and accept their fate right now is crazy.

I genuinely think the Celtic players and fans don’t want to win the league under these circumstances. I have mates who support Celtic and they do not want to be handed the title. They want to win it properly and are happy to sit tight until football finally resumes.

Despite the anger of Burns and others there is no effort from Celtic to push for a decision on this season’s suspended title.

Last week Peter Lawwell stated that the preferred option was for the season to be played to a finish which is in line with advise from throughout the world of football.
