A decade ago it seemed like easy money. Get on the telly or radio, share some cliches, crack a joke or two and count up the cheques.

With three channels sharing TV coverage of Scottish football, TalkSPORT, Radio Scotland and Radio Clyde producing daily shows there was plenty of slots to go around for everyone in the network.

Sharing the honours between the ‘Old Firm’ hyping up the derby as the biggest fixture in the world kept everyone happy as we moved onto the next D-Day, the biggest derby till the next one.

But then just under a decade ago it all changed. The Blue Room has been left barren apart from the Petrofac Cup that they’d rather forget about.

Celtic and in particular Neil Lennon have made life uncomfortable. Praise is given through gritted teeth- when there is a glimmer of hope from Ibrox they go overboard but within a week or two, sometimes just days they are made to look foolish. It’s the hope that is killing them.

Kris Boyd, Alex Rae and Ally McCoist entered 2020 full of hope, an end to their suffering with memories of Stevie ME fist pumping at Celtic Park, screaming into the Sky Sports cameras.

The next few weeks look especially painful. More success for Celtic while explaining the failure of Mr Gerrard wasn’t part of the gig when they dipped their toes into the lucrative world of radio and telly.
