Celtic have been linked with a move for Aaron Hickey.

The defender is expected to leave Hearts as soon as the transfer window opens with the extent of the club’s financial problems revealed in midweek when Ann Budge announced a 50% pay cut across the board.

Hickey spent a couple of seasons as part of Celtic’s Academy before returning to Tynecastle in July 2018 to sign a professional contract.

Despite has rapid promotion into the first team and transfer interest from down south he remains on his original contract which runs until June 2021.

Alan Nixon in The Sun reports:

Palace are long-term admirers of the versatile Scotland youth star, as are Southampton and Man City.

But Celtic remain interested in their ex-academy kid, who only left in July 2018. And the Hoops have a 30-per-cent sell-on clause inserted for any future Hickey transfer.

With the current uncertainty in football transfer activity is expected to be light but clubs will be aware of opportunities to exploit in a depressed market.

This season Hickey has made 22 SPFL appearances after breaking into the side in May where he played against Celtic in the last two matches of the season.
