Rarely has the outcome of the Highland League created so much interest.
In normal circumstances whoever tops the 18 team league barely creates a ripple even though it now opens up a pathway into the SPFL via a play off with the Lowland League winners and the club at the bottom of League Two.
That all changed around 5pm today when a meeting of the Highland League clubs declared Brora Rangers as the 2019/20 champions.
With games left to play and two clubs capable of overtaking their points total the Highland League has done the right thing in unprecedented times.
Straight away Celtic fans highlighted the decision, it’s one that Neil Doncaster is likely to have to take at some stage.
Everyone’s desire is for the remaining matches to be played. In the SPFL Celtic have six matches still to be played including a third away match at two top six sides.
Ideally Neil Lennon’s side will get to clinch the 2019/20 title on the park but after building up a 13 point lead after 30 matches it’s only a matter of time before they celebrate alongside Brora Rangers.
The Highland League have brought their season to an early end AND awarded the title to leaders Brora Rangers ??

9 games left for 3rd and 4th. 9 x 3 =27. Add that to current scores would put them on 82 and 80. As far as I’m aware that beats 72…

13 points clear, 18 to play for, therefore not mathematically over, sounds familiar ??

There you go. It can just happen like that. It’s not ideal for anyone but the fairest way to end the competition.
