On the second of December Kris Boyd told readers of The Sun that Leigh Griffiths had four weeks to save his Celtic career.

It was a message that he repeated in his media appearances with TalkSPORT and Sky Sports. By the end of December Griffiths hadn’t added to his three goal tally for the season. The only match that he started was the dead rubber away to Cluj in the Europa League when Neil Lennon left his big hitters at home.

The Celtic boss never lost faith with the former Hibs striker. Despite signing Patryk Klimala during the January transfer window Griffiths partnered Odsonne Edouard in the first game of 2020, responding with the opening goal against Partick Thistle.

Four days later he scored in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Rugby Park. Stumbling Boyd responded by reeling off inaccurate stats about the striker.

Since then Griffiths has been creating stats and records of his own. On Saturday he scored his eight goal of 2020, that’s seven more than Alfredo Morelos has managed across the city.

Among the records Griffiths has overtaken John Hartson in the list of Celtic’s all-time goalscorers, it was a landmark that the Welshman was happy to acknowledge.
