Graeme Souness has spoken out about the ‘advisory role’ that he’d like to take up at Ibrox.

The former Scotland captain is now based in Bournemouth with extensive media commitments with Sky Sports.

It’s 14 years since he was sacked by Newcastle United, shortly after he signed Craig Moore. In his previous job at Blackburn, Souness signed Barry Ferguson and Tugay from Dave Murray’s club.

With Steven Gerrard as manager and Ross Wilson as Director of Football there is no obvious role for Souness at Ibrox other than some vague job title to help with the feel-good factor for season ticket sales.

On Friday night on Twitter David Tanner suggested a role for Souness, today the Daily Record has sounded out the 66-year-old about an emotional return to the club he ditched in April 1991 as a title race with Aberdeen was entering the home stretch.

I’d like to be invited back to Rangers in some capacity but it would only be if the people in charge thought I could help. One day I’d like to go and be on the board in an advisory role.

I’m still very active in what I do. I don’t want to be presumptuous or get ahead of myself – but that could be one for the future.

There was no comment from Ibrox yesterday by new Interim Chairman Douglas Park.

On Friday at 8pm Dave King made a personal statement to the Press Association, at 10.20pm the club issued a statement confirming Park’s new role.
