In the mid-nineties Andy Gray never saw it coming.

The ‘Old Firm’ derby was such a big deal for Sky Sports that Gray and Martin Tyler would be sent to Glasgow to do the fixture justice.

The former Everton and Wolves striker had never made any bones about which Glasgow side he followed, in 1989 he was signed by Graeme Souness to wind down his career at Ibrox.

A few years later Rangers were closing in on the 9-in-a-row record set by Jock Stein’s side of a previous generation but the target was always 10, always to do better, to raise the bar.

I don’t believe you’ll see another team, be it a Rangers or a Celtic going for 10 titles in a row, I think those days are gone. Rangers supporters know that this is their one chance and Celtic supporters know that this is their one chance.

In May 1998 Wim Jansen’s side brought the run of Ibrox title wins to a halt. Walter Smith left as a loser, followed out the door by Ally McCoist, Richard Gough, Stuart McCall, Brian Laudrup and other legends.

In 2012 more than 10-in-a-row was lost, everything was gone when Her Majesty refused a CVA forcing Rangers into liquidation.

Celtic are on the cusp of a second 9-in-a-row, when football resumes five wins out of eight will secure the title. After that Gray’s nightmare comes into focus, not just nine but 10 in a row once again wiping out the achievements of Dave Murray, Souness and Walter Smith during the nineties.
