Alex Rae has given his nod towards branding a Celtic title success as tainted.

The former St Mirren and Dundee manager struggles to contain his dislike for the 8-in-a-row champions with hopes high that the winning run was about to end this season.

After the end of year Glasgow derby result there was a certain spring in Rae’s step but 2020 has turned into a personal nightmare with the gap between the top two stretched from 2 to 13 points.

Rae has watched pitchside as Kilmarnock, Hearts and Hamilton have dismantled his dreams of a happy and glorious end to the season as Celtic stride further clear despite a far tougher run of fixtures.

As soon as football was suspended he switched to the Null & Void camp but with that option closed off he is still in denial about Celtic’s superiority on the pitch.

In a Question and Answer session with Mark Wilson in The Sun he demonstrated how painful another Celtic title confirmation will be.

Uefa have indicated they will give the green light for Celtic to be crowned nine in a row winners. If the season is declared over and Celtic are made champions, is it fair to consider the title ‘tainted’ given the 13 point gap over Rangers? Of course, in seasons 1890/91 and 1952/53 Rangers were awarded the title despite having an inferior goal difference.

MW: “I don’t think the title should be classed as tainted.

“I think in the record books it will show that there were fewer games played, but if Rangers had won their game in hand and all teams sat on 30 games played, Celtic are worthy champions with a 10 point lead over that amount of games played.”

AR: “Depending what side of the fence you sit will determine whether the title is tainted. My own personal take is that you can only be awarded the title once all games are played.”

Rae was ineligible for every match that he played as a Rangers player from 2004-2006 with his token salary with the SPL and SFA topped up by an undeclared ‘Trust’ that the Supreme Court in 2017 ruled was a form of disguised remuneration.

UEFA meet on Thursday and are expected to give member associations approval to finalise their 2019/20 league campaigns.
