It was a decent talking point but far, far from a realistic prospect.

As the son of ex-Ranger Derek and nephew of ex-Rangers Barry the thought of Lewis Ferguson playing for Celtic would certainly generate headlines as well as creating some domestic difficulties.

As others have discovered Celtic’s midfield is a highly competitive area of the park. At different times this season Ryan Christie, Tom Rogic and Olivier Ntcham have spent time on the bench. Ewan Henderson went on loan to Ross County with two places in Neil Lennon’s side claimed by Scott Brown and Scott McGregor.

In January Celtic topped up their midfield options by signing Ismaila Soro, Kerr McInroy recently returned to the reserve side after 10 months out injured.

Ferguson isn’t close to the quality of those players, he’s discovered that against Celtic over the last two seasons where he has come off second best every time.

The former Hamilton midfielder has made more than 80 appearances at Aberdeen, he has developed well but he only needs to contact Christie to find out how fierce competition is for places in the Celtic midfield.

Over the next 18 months Ferguson might earn a £1m move to an English Championship side or run his contract down before moving to Ibrox. Only the elite make it to Celtic, Barry will still be on speaking terms with his nephew for some time to come.
