Celtic fans have taken Tom English to task after the BBC reporter slammed the SPFL about the wording and procedures involved in last weeks ballot to decide the three lower divisions based on average points to date.
To reporters used to the basic football routine of groin strains, transfer rumours and referee controversies it does seems quite wordy but crucially it complies with the 2006 Standard Companies Act Voting Protocol, Section 296.
Despite their vast resources Radio Scotland went to town over Friday’s initial vote, devoting the bulk of their Saturday afternoon Sportsound programme to the shock/horror revelations of Scot Gardiner’s WhatsApp chats.
Had BBC Scotland Sport contacted a colleague on the Business desk it could have been explained that the wording was consistent with Company Law. Had the SPFL board failed to comply with the law of the land BBC Scotland Sport would be at the front of the queue to criticise their amateur handling of the vote.
Since providing Gardiner with the floor on Saturday there has been no follow up comments from the media friendly Inverness Caley Thistle CEO. Shortly after Gardiner came off air Douglas Park issued a statement calling for the suspension of Neil Doncaster and Rob McKenzie.

Ibrox Managing Director Stewart Robertson is also a member of the SPFL board.
Prior to finally getting a full time job as BBC Scotland’s Chief Sports Reporter English was with Scotland on Sunday..
This is priceless. If a club voted Yes, they couldn’t change their mind later. if they voted No, they could. Handy. https://t.co/K1uju0XjOW

Standard Company Law Tom, Section 296. That’s why, with all due respect, you and Mr Stewart are so completely out of your depth. https://t.co/7rLo3gj5GZ

Tom & @BBCSportsound have had an absolute mare the past few days. Cringeworthy bleating.

Standard Companies Act 2006 voting protocol… The Club with the smoking gun, the ICT non director CE and Dundee FC are now radio silent after having so much to say in recent days… surely that’s where the journalistic scrutiny should be? ?

You may be a bit out your depth on this one Tom.

Tom, If you are criticising the SPFL for adhering to the Companies Act it may be an idea to set the record straight.
— mrimo (@ibamorrison) April 13, 2020
This is priceless. Tom references company law and demonstrates that’s not a good idea for sports hacks to dip their toes in there if he wants to suggest some dodgy dealings. Don’t be like Tom.

Rules are rules, Tom

This is standard Companies Law. There may be many other aspects of this process to criticise but you’re just making yourself look silly here Tom.
— Andy Nairn (@andynairn) April 13, 2020
This is standard in corporate law.
