UEFA are adamant that the 2019/20 season is played to a conclusion- dealing a crushing blow to the ‘Null and Void’ lobby in Scotland.
All 55 national associations were brought together at a video conference today to discuss a number of issues thrown up by the suspension of the game across the continent.
Player contracts and the Transfer Window are major issues but nothing compares with getting fixtures resumed to complete domestic and European commitments.
Miguel Delaney of The Independent has been closer to the action than most when it comes to givernance and legislation, he reports:
UEFA and the collective European leagues are committed to completing the 2019/20 domestic and continental seasons before 2020/21 begins, and are now actively planning for the major showpiece finals to be played behind closed doors, with voiding the campaign “off the table”.
The governing body has staged another videoconference on Wednesday about player contracts and the transfer window amid the coronavirus crisis, but The Independent has been told by multiple sources that detailed discussions have already taken place about the fate of this season. All parties are fully aligned with the English view that the campaign must be completed, whenever that is.
There is also now an acceptance that the Champions League final – the showpiece of the entire European calendar – will take place in front of an empty stadium, along with the Europa League final.
In Scotland Celtic are 13 points clear with eight matches left to play and well on course to lift their ninth successive title. Things are more complex at the bottom of the SPFL Premiership where four clubs are separated by six points with eight rounds of fixtures still to be played.
