Even after listening to Tom English getting humiliated live on air on Saturday Alex Rae walked down the same path on Super Scoreboard tonight.

On Friday night the rugby guy from BBC Scotland thought that he had finally uncovered a soccer exclusive. Not just any exclusive but one that would justify his non-stop campaign for an enquiry into something at the SPFL.

For weeks he wanted something investigated, quite what he hadn’t been told but every Saturday afternoon and across Twitter he wanted an investigation, just as Douglas Park had demanded.

English’s big exclusive wasn’t such a big deal, he didn’t understand the difference between a loan or an advance. A quick call to the bank or the HR department of BBC Scotland would have put him right.

Neil Doncaster had an open goal when he appeared on Sportsound, the difference between an advance and a loan was explained repeatedly.

During his playing days Rae thought that he had signed up to an imaginative tax scam when he moved to Ibrox, a so-called Employee Benefit Trust which was a loan never to be repaid. In 2017 The Supreme Court ruled that it was a form of disguised remuneration, liable to Income Tax, National Insurance, interest and penalties.

Tonight host Gordon Duncan and Hugh Keevins tried to spell it out to Rae but there was no sign that he understood the issue, perhaps he has been getting information from the same source as the rugby expert at BBC Scotland.
