Neil Lennon wasn’t falling for any media talk of sympathy for Steven Gerrard.

In Glasgow you rarely get a second chance at winning the title, if the 2019/20 Premiership title had gone to Ibrox the Irishman would almost certainly be looking for a new job.

At the sharp end of sport it is about winners and losers, Lennon knows the environment with five titles won as a player and the same amount from the dug-out.

Yesterday’s title triumph was unusual due to the season being cut short but the Celtic boss has a clear message for anyone wanting to twist the statistics from the 30 matches played.

Asked if he had sympathy for the Premiership runners-up Lennon told TalkSPORT:

I don’t have any sympathy at all really. I doubt very much any right-minded person would have envisaged Rangers catching us. Not only were we 13 points clear but we had a 25 goal difference as well, so you could easily say we were 14 points clear.

The only sympathy I have is for my players in terms of they never got the chance to play out the season. They were also in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup as well and they were going for a fourth Treble.

In terms of the league championship, it was only going – in our minds – to one place and we were planning ahead for that eventuality.

The unique set up of the SPFL where every club has different fixtures makes Celtic’s triumph even more memorable.

Lennon had taken Celtic to face Motherwell, Aberdeen and Livingston twice in 30 matches, across the city St Johnstone was the only top six ground that Gerrard’s squad visited twice.
