Kris Boyd has warned Celtic to be careful with what they wish for in terms of goalkeepers.

Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell have a difficult balancing act to work on as they try to get a deal over the line for Fraser Forster while keeping Gordon in mind for Plan B.

A quick decision from Southampton on their third-choice keeper seems unlikely while Forster’s return to Lennoxtown gives another indication of where he wants to be next season.

Gordon could probably be first choice keeper at any SPFL Premiership club but hasn’t closed the door on a new Celtic deal. A further complication for the keeper is knowing that guaranteed first team football will almost certainly earn him a recall to the Scotland international side.

It is a delicate situation for all sides to negotiate but in typical fashion Boyd paints the darkest possible picture of Celtic to readers of The Sun as he states the case for Gordon:

Neil Lennon doesn’t seem to rate him, does he? Not really. Let’s get it right, he signed Fraser Forster who was sensational last season.

But if he really trusted Craig then he wouldn’t have gone to the board and asked for major money to get the ex-England keeper on loan from Southampton.

Now Lenny wants Forster back to be his No 1 for next season’s ten-in-a-row campaign — but those talks could last for weeks yet and even then it’s far from certain they’ll get things over the line.

In the meantime Celtic need to make it look like they’re doing everything in their power to keep Craig by offering a new contract. So when he rejects it he’s the one painted as the villain.

I’ve seen it before and I’ll see it again. What I will say is Celtic should be careful what they wish for.

During his long record-breaking career spanning 19 years Boyd managed to score just one goal against Celtic.
