Kyle Lafferty has achieved a unique treble- released by three clubs within a calendar year.

Today Sunderland announced that the 32-year-old won’t be offered a new contract as his career accelerates downhill.

Back in August 2018 Lafferty was set to stop 10-in-a-row after moving to Ibrox from Hearts just a couple of weeks after scoring the only goal of the game in a defeat of Celtic at Tynecastle.

Steven Gerrard soon realised that he had made a big mistake, five months later Jermain Defoe was signed with Lafferty being mutually consented halfway through his contract.

Last August he told the Daily Record:

Steven had his view on me as a player and you don’t want to be told by any manager at any club that they are going down a different route and you won’t be needed next season.

The manager has judged me in training and clearly that’s prevented me getting more games. The reality now is that I won’t wear that blue jersey again or play for that incredible support and it’s a horrible feeling.

I’m just scunnered that I’ve had to leave without saying goodbye to those fans who have been great with me. When I joined Rangers from Hearts last summer I took a pay cut and planned to finish my career there.

At the end of August he joined Sarsborg in Norway but after one goal in eight matches he was on the move, joining Sunderland in January where he started just two matches while coming off the bench to score twice.

With a glut of players hunting for clubs it isn’t the best time for a 32-year-old to be looking for his fourth club in a year.
