Gavin Strachan is the left-field candidate to replace Damien Duff as Celtic’s first team coach.

The son of former Celtic boss Gordon, Strachan is currently assistant manager at Peterbrough (to Darren Ferguson) with his previous coaching experience at Doncaster Rovers and non-league Ilkerston.

Gavin had short loan stints at Motherwell and Dundee as a player with his longest playing spell at Hartlepool where he made just under 100 appearances.

Scottish born Nixon has strong contacts throughout the English game with a higher hit rate than most reporters.

Strachan’s lack of experience of Scottish football is an obvious issue but the same applied to Duff who worked on the training ground with John Kennedy and Neil Lennon knowing the Scottish game inside out.

Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus could have been promoted in-house while Lennon’s former backroom team of Johan Mjallby, Gary Parker and Alan Thompson are all available.
