Alan Thompson has backed up Chris Sutton’s famous claim that Dunfermline lay down at Ibrox on the final day of the 2002/03 season.

While Celtic battled their way through six rounds in the UEFA Cup to reach the final in Seville Alex McLeish’s side ended their interest in Europe with a first round exit to Viktoria Zizkov.

Both teams were level on points going into the final match of the season, in midweek Celtic had played for two hours in the heat of Seville before heading to Kilmarnock while Dunfermline prepared to bring their season down at Ibrox.

Dunfermline boss Jimmy Calderwood had never disguised being a life-long Rangers fan with his side crashing to a 6-1 defeat with the SPL title going to Ibrox on goal difference.

Covering Thompson’s appearance on the Radio Scotland podcast The Sun reports:

I think we all had the feeling but Chris was the one who had the interview on the day and he said what we were all thinking to be honest.

He took the brunt of it. I think he got a three or four game ban which was harsh. He was speaking his mind. It was his opinion, it was our opinion.

For Rangers to win by that many goals, and we watched some of the goals after the game, it didn’t look right. It didn’t look like it should have happened that way, but it did, we have to live with it.

The day after their 6-1 humilation at Ibrox the Dunfermline squad and management flew to Majorca to celebrate their season.
