Shaun Maloney believes that there is more to Leigh Griffiths’ fitness issues than has been made public.

Last Saturday it emerged that the striker had been left out of the Celtic squad to that flew to France to play in three pre-season friendlies.

Alongside comments about working on his fitness from a club spokesperson there were suggestions that the player was over-weight and out of condition.

Last night Neil Lennon held nothing back as he criticised Griffiths on a number of issues, most importantly claiming that he wasn’t fit enough to work with the first team squad.

Throughout Lockdown players had their fitness monitored with Maloney highlighting that issue when he spoke to The Sun:

It’s not a good situation but I’m sure there’s more to it than what we know. You read the quotes and you can see how disappointed his manager is.

Nowadays with the apps and the programmes they know exactly what the players are doing during lockdown.

The players all have to do the same amount of work so that would be the biggest disappointment if a team-mate is doing less than you. The ball is in his court so hopefully he comes back in a better condition. He’s got time to rectify it

Maloney spent the 2017/18 season working with the Celtic reserve side before taking up a coaching role alongside Roberto Martinez with the Belgian international squad.

Other than the two remaining matches in France Celtic have no other scheduled matches for players to work on their fitness.
