Celtic are reported to be stunned and set to contest their SPFL disrepute charge.

‘Bringing the game into disrepute’ is the catch all one favoured by the football authorities with Celtic apparently guilty of not controlling the away from training ground movements of Boli Bolingoli.

Carried to its logical extension it could see clubs get charged for parking tickets picked up by their staff members while far more serious football-related incidents can be conveniently overlooked.

Peter Lawwell was recently voted onto the board of the SPFL but unless they are going through the motions of appearing to do something it looks like his influence is minimal.

Reacting to yesterday’s developments The Sun reports:

ABERDEEN and Celtic are ready to fight their shock SPFL charges. Hoops sinner Boli Bolingoli and eight Dons stars are facing potential eight-match bans from the SFA.

But Aberdeen and Celtic also face SPFL disciplinary proceedings for allegedly breaching pandemic regulations.

SunSport understands that both are stunned at the club charges – and will contest them next month. There is no limit to the SPFL’s punishment powers, although points deductions or forfeited games are highly unlikely.

Last night both clubs received private support from fellow Scottish teams who are baffled by this SPFL charge.

Celtic have a poor record in recent seasons of challenging issues with the football authorities.

In 2014 Aleksandar Tonev was given a seven-match suspension of ‘the balance of probability’. Complaints about refereeing matters involving Steven McLean and John Beaton have been dismissed while Ryan Christie served a two-match suspension last season when an identical incident on the Celtic midfielder a year earlier went unpunished.
