Aberdeen’s match with Celtic next Saturday will go ahead as planned despite the Dons having eight players self isolating.

The SPFL has been rocked by the issue, last night they announced that tomorrow’s match with St Johnstone would go ahead before a swift u-turn late this morning that saw the match postponed.

News of the first positive test from Derek McInnes’ squad emerged on Thursday afternoon, by Thursday night a second case was reported with six more players self-isolating after visiting the same pub in Aberdeen city centre.

The Sun reported at 15.43 today:

ABERDEEN’S fixtures against Hamilton and Celtic are ON despite the postponement of tomorrow’s meeting with St Johnstone.

The Dons were rocked after two first team players received positive coronavirus tests with a further six told to quarantine for 14 days.

That led to question marks over their meeting with Hamilton on Wednesday and Celtic next Saturday. But the governing body say both matches will go ahead as normal despite the fact the Dons will be without EIGHT stars.

An SPFL statement said: “In response to media enquiries following this afternoon’s announcement from the Joint Response Group, please note that Aberdeen’s next two fixtures, against Hamilton Academical and Celtic, are scheduled to proceed as normal.”

If the SFA avoid any further u-turns the big losers in this issue will be St Johnstone who face a rearranged game when Derek McInnes will have a full strength squad to choose from.

Following the developments of the last 24 hours other clubs have reinforced the message to their players that they have to return home from training and playing to ensure that football retains its special bubble status.
