Steven Gerrard has pleaded with the Ibrox money men to allow him to sign even more new players.

The Liverpool legend has brought in over 30 players over four transfer windows with many players coming and going such as Eros Grezda and Kyle Lafferty at big expense.

During the current window more than £10m has been spent on Ianis Hagi, Cedric Itten and Kamer Roofe but following a pattern no club is interested in signing any of Gerrard’s players. John McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun have also been added to the wage bill.

Despite intensive campaigning about worldwide interest in Alfredo Morelos, Borna Barasic, Conor Goldson, Ryan Kent and Glen Kamara the closest to an offer being made was when Jim White talked the Lille chairman into a quote on TalkSPORT. Strangely there has been no follow up bid for Morelos.

A year ago Mark Allen decided to spend more time with his family with the pressure increasing on his replacement, Ross ‘star-maker’ Wilson to bring in a seven figure transfer fee.

Before and during Saturday’s win over Dundee United Gerrard watched Balogun, Ryan Jack, Brandon Barker and Morelos pick up knocks, after the match he told the Daily Record:

I’ve been really clear that we need to add so I think we maybe need to try to accelerate that. Going off what I have just seen in the treatment room, there is definitely going to be two, if not three, missing for a couple of weeks. We need to add pretty quickly so that our numbers are OK.

We have lists that we are pursuing but in terms of names and how close we are, it’s a difficult question for me to answer right now.

Andy Halliday is still available as a free agent in-between shifts for Radio Clyde and Radio Scotland.
