Douglas Ross will make the long journey from his home in Moray to Glasgow to collect a match fee and expenses from his appointment as assistant referee at today’s Celtic v Livingston SPFL match.

It has been a hectic week for the leader of the Scottish Tories with regular rounds of media appearances in-between representing his constituents at Westminster.

For reasons best known to the 27-year-old and the SFA he’ll do it all again next Sunday when Celtic take on Hibs.

With a vast pool of assistant referees to choose from and only six fixtures a week to allocate it seems bizarre that anyone officiates in back-to-back matches involving the same club.

Given Ross’ day job and the distance involved it is a decision that is hard to justify. Next month the three lower divisions will begin their season with the many match officials having gone seven months without a competitive appointment.

Current regulations mean that 50,000 season ticket holders haven’t seen their club play in six months while the MP for Moray will have clocked up two Celtic matches in nine days.

Last month he apologised to constituents for missing a VJ Day memorial in order to pick up a match fee at a football match between Kilmarnock and St Johnstone.

Gavin Duncan will referee today’s match with Steven McLean in charge of the game against Hibs next week.
