Ian Maxwell has claimed that the Scottish Government are looking to get fans back inside grounds much sooner than the six month timeline that was suggested last month by the UK Prime Minister.

Scottish football went into Lockdown on March 13 with the seasons called at the end of April without another match being played or supporter getting inside a ground.

During the extended close season supporters stumped up for Season Tickets with only the hope that at some stage they’d be allowed in to watch the matches that they had paid for.

So far two test events have been staged but there has been no follow up events scheduled despite most other forms of business reopening to the public.

Last week Douglas Ross of the Scottish Tories spoke out on behalf of football clubs, that was followed by claims from Neil Doncaster that the ban on fans was a political decision rather than one based on science.

Discussing Monday’s meeting with the Scottish Government Sports Miniter Joe Fitzpatrick about getting fans back inside stadiums and the six month suggestion, Maxwell told the Daily Record:

He was clear on that. He sees potentially something happening much sooner. It’s obviously dependent on the prevalence of the virus decreasing.

He is going to come back to us with what that actually looks like, because we need to know what those numbers need to get to before we can allow that just to give everyone clarity.

The sports minister outlined that he’s been in detailed conversations with his UK counterpart around a funding package for sport and under that there will be a Barnett Consequential that comes up to Scotland.

We were obviously making the case for that money to be diverted into Scottish football to help safeguard the future of the member clubs.

Last week UEFA announced that clubs could have 30% of their stadium open for Europa League ties dependent on local rules.
