Odsonne Edouard returned to international football yesterday but failed to score as France eased to a 5-0 win away to Liechtenstein.

The Celtic striker was in the starting line up but was replaced after 75 minutes by Kolo Muani with France already leading 4-0.

That result ensures that France qualify for the finals next summer as either group winners or best runners-up. After nine matches they have picked up 24 points ahead of Sunday’s final match with Switzerland who have a 100% record with 27 points from nine games.

With nine goals from six matches going into yesterday’s fixture Edouard would have been looking to add to his impressive ratio but his relative goal drought continued.

Whether it is the after effects of the virus, transfer speculation or the brutal attacks he came under from Dundee United in August there is certainly something missing in the performances of the former Paris Saint Germain striker.

After Sunday’s match against the Swiss Edouard will have a full week to focus on Celtic’s match against Hibs next Saturday with Albian Ajeti also at Lennoxtown competing for a place at Easter Road.
