Nick Hammond and Tosh McKinlay are reported to have watched Thomas Robert in his last two appearances for Airdrie.

The 20-year-old is best known as the son of former Newcastle star Laurent and moved to Airdrie in the summer rather than stay on with French side Montpellier.

It seemed a bizarre move to make but it seems that reports from the third tier of the Scottish game have made their way to Hammond with the Head of Football Operations taking a look at the winger.

The Sun reports:

CELTIC have joined a host of clubs keeping tabs on Airdrie winger Thomas Robert. SunSport understands Hoops head of recruitment Nick Hammond watched the French kid against East Fife last week.

And Parkhead scout Tosh McKinlay took in the Diamonds’ home clash with Montrose on Saturday to check on the 20-year-old winger. Robert, son of former Newcastle star Laurent, was a shock arrival at the League One side during the summer.

He rejected a new contract at Montpellier and the chance to join bigger clubs down south to head for Scotland’s third tier and play competitive football.

Celtic have been short on winger options this season with Mikey Johnston unavailable and James Forrest out of action since September.

Moi Elyounoussi has featured on the left with Ryan Christie and Jeremie Frimpong on the other flank trying to fill the gap vacated by Forrest’s absence.

Having spent the best part of £15m on transfers during the summer it’s unlikely that Celtic will be big spenders when the January window opens up.
