Celtic have been credited with an interest in Sean McGurk of Wigan Athletic.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder has still to make his first team debut but made his mark last season with a goal away to Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup.

With his contract expiring in the summer Leeds have been linked with McGurk but with Celtic signing Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Afolabi, Luca Connell and Lee O’Connor in similar circumstances the hoops are also in the frame.

Under Nick Hammond the focus of Celtic’s transfer activity has switched to the English market with Brexit also a factor involved.

Leeds Live reports:

McGurk could technically leave for “free” in the summer, though due to his age, Wigan would be entitled to compensation in that event. Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers have also been credited with an interest in the highly-rated teen.

It does look very likely that there will be a major rebuild at Celtic next summer but with so much uncertainty over the future of the manager and key players it is difficult to image much transfer business this month.

With his name out there and dozens of clubs within an hour’s drive of Wigan it seems most likely that McGurk will stay put this month then consider his options in the summer with Wigan sitting second bottom of League One and facing a second successive relegation.
