Barry Coffey has joined Cliftonville on loan until the end of the season.

With no prospect of football below first team level this season Celtic have been trying to get their younger players out in search of football.

In Scotland League One and Two remain suspended with Coffey joining team-mate Ben Wylie at Ballymena United in the Dansk Bank Premiership.

This morning Cliftonville announced:

Cliftonville Football Club are very pleased to announce the signing of Barry Coffey on loan from Celtic.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who has moved to the Reds for the remainder of the season, has featured for the Hoops’ Under-17 and Reserve set-ups since joining from hometown side Nenagh AFC in the summer of 2017 and enjoyed a pre-season run out with the Hoops’ first team at the beginning of the 2019/20 term.

Breaking into the Celtic midfield is a tough ask with players such as Tom Rogic and Olivier Ntcham on the bench while David Turnbull and Ismaila Soro make the breakthrough.

Coffey is one of a batch of promising midfielders at Celtic which includes Luca Connell, Scott Robertson and Ewan Henderson. Last January Coffey, an Irish u-19 internationalist signed a contract extension keeping him at Celtic until June 2022.

Cliftonville are in sixth place in the 12 club Premiership, on Tuesday they face Coleraine followed on Saturday with a trip to Glenavon.
